Does anyone still have apples lying on the ground? The fall storms have knocked most apples down by now. Consider making your own applesauce for pancake toppings or one of those recommended five-a-day fruit servings. Applesauce is delicious and only requires apples!
Applesauce is naturally sweet and full of vitamins. Applesauce also freezes well.
So, frugalgo pick them up! Wash them, cut out the bad parts, core them and simmer them in about an inch of water until they’re fork-poking soft. You can then frugaldo one of two last steps:
- The skins will fall off of the slices now. Once the batch is cool, just reach into the pot and take the skins out. Then pulse them through a food processor, bag and freeze them. Don’t forget to eat some first. : )
- Push them through a sieve. Put them in baggies and freeze them.
Your apples should have a nice color if there are any red or pink varieties in your pot. Happy eating!
