Frugal is as frugal does. So, frugaldo!

Welcome to Frugaldo, a site dedicated to every frugaldo.  A frugaldo is an action that preserves resources.  Doing something is an action; NOT doing something is also an action.  “Let’s go out for ice cream!”  “Let’s not!  Let’s go for a walk and eat our freezer-burned ice cream up!”  (You get the idea!)

Frugaldo this!  Make something from scratch.  Construct something useful that would otherwise require you to buy that item, pay for that service or waste a precious resource.

Here’s what I did today.  I made breakfast from scratch.  I got up five minutes earlier to stir 5 ingredients together in a bowl.  I stirred these common commodities with a spoon.  (This not only saved energy, it added to the peace and quiet of the morning.)

Here’s the basic recipe, multiply it accordingly.  I triple it to feed five: two teenagers, one pre-teen, two adults.

PANCAKES

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 egg

I use a griddle purchased a decade ago from the camping section of a superstore for $11.00.  It fits over two burners and makes three large or six small pancakes at a time.  I keep the unclaimed pancakes in the oven on the lowest setting, 170*F.  I sometimes use store bought syrup but lately have used a homemade syrup recipe.  I’ll save that recipe for another day’s frugaldo.  For fiber, I often add 1/3 cup quick oats per cup of flour to this pancake recipe.  I’ve been using white whole-wheat flour, which also adds fiber.  No one seems to notice that the pancakes are darker because pancakes are naturally griddled to a beautiful brown color.

I’ve been doing this for about a month now and no one is complaining or requesting their fancy $8.00 per box cereals back!  Hot breakfasts are healthier and heartier.

What have you done today that is frugal?
